How to talk to your loved ones about getting an estate plan.
Recently, I was talking to a someone about being an estate planning attorney. He told me that he just convinced his parents to get an estate plan. Many people are concerned about aging parents and want to talk to them about getting some documents such as a will or trust. But it can be a difficult topic for some.
It may be uncomfortable at first, but most people feel better having an estate plan. Not having to live with uncertainty will reduce stress and anxiety for all family members. Starting the conversation is the most important step.
Here are some tips about how to talk to your loved ones:
1. Get your estate plan set up and talk about it with others. Parents will be more inclined to do the same if you have gone through the process. If shows that it is important to you. Also, you can explain how it went, how easy it was, and how much better you feel.
2. Be mindful of the timing. You are likely to meet resistance if your parents are basting the turkey or playing with grandkids. Find a quiet moment where you can talk privately.
3. It may take a few conversations. You may not be successful the first time. You may have to start small and make a few suggestions before you ever talk specifics.
4. Respect their boundaries. Your parents may want to handle the process on their own. Others may want help. Respect their wishes and boundaries.
5. Talk about why it is important to you. Your parents may not understand why you are asking them to do this. They may not see the benefit for you until you tell them. Express the relief you will have by knowing there is a plan in place.
If you have questions, set up a free consultation so you have the right tools to begin a conversation.
